SICP TACP by Donald Knuth The Compiler book (aka the Dragon book). | | The Seasoned Schemer Daniel P. Both an excellent introduction and a useful reference work. Use a model such as The Little Lisper (book) as a way to drill in assembly language opcodes, programming, techniques… need more examples of good and bad programming practice. It's counter productive, as often there is a better book (more focused on a specific problem domain, easier to understand, geared more toward a specific programming language or programming skill level) that someone more knowledgeable could recommend. * Mastering Regular Expressions (3rd Edition). The book provides views of programming languages using widely varying levels of abstraction, maintaining a clear connection between the high-level and low-level views. I have a hard-copy of the 3rd edition of Dybvig's The Scheme Programming Language, and obviously can access the 4th edition online? I've heard great things about this unusual Q&A book that straddles the border of functional and logic programming. I would substitute: The Little Schemer – It's not about the Scheme language at all, it's about teaching recursive thinking. I also have the Little Schemer book but find it a bit weird. | | The Little Schemer Daniel P. Use alongside the online Advanced Bash Scripting guide, and the O'Reilly Sed and Awk book. For a little more lightweight read I'd recommend Why Software Sucks by David S Platt – this one is a little bit like the “Don't make me think” book mentioned in the comments above.
